Edward Patrick Holcroft is an English film, television, and stage actor. He is best known for his roles in theKingsman film franchise and in the television seriesWolf Hall (2015),London Spy (2015),Alias Grace (2017), andThe English Game (2020).
Holcroft is the second of three sons born to Lt. Col.Patrick Holcroft, a soldier, and Kathleen "Annie" Holcroft (née Roberts), a former publisher atCondé Nast. His elder brother, Oliver, is a former soldier who served with theGrenadier Guards inAfghanistan.[1][2]
Holcroft was sent to boarding school at age 8, first attending prep school atSummer Fields School in Oxford and then to a Roman Catholic school,Ampleforth College, inNorth Yorkshire.[3]
He initially wanted to become a professionaldrummer, having attended music school, but switched to acting after appearing in a play atOxford Brookes University.[3] He then undertook post-graduate studies in acting at theDrama Centre London ofCentral Saint Martins,University of the Arts London, graduating in 2012.[4]
Holcroft is best known for his roles as Charlie Hesketh in the 2015 filmKingsman: The Secret Service and its 2017 sequelKingsman: The Golden Circle; asGeorge Boleyn in the 2015 British drama seriesWolf Hall;[5] and as Alex Turner in the 2015 BBC drama seriesLondon Spy.[6]
In 2015, Holcroft acted withDominic West andJanet McTeer inLes Liaisons Dangereuses at theDonmar Warehouse.[7]
In 2017, he appeared in the historical miniseriesGunpowder on the BBC andAlias Grace onNetflix and theCBC.[3]
