Edson Mendes Barboza Júnior (born January 21, 1986) is a Brazilian and American professionalmixed martial artist, formerMuay Thai fighter andkickboxer. He currently competes in theFeatherweight division of theUltimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and has formerly competed atLightweight.

Background

Barboza comes fromNova Friburgo,Rio de Janeiro.[8] He was born prematurely at 28 weeks and given a 50/50 chance of surviving past infancy.[12][13] At the age of 8, he began practicing and competing in Muay Thai.[8] His professional Muay Thai record is 25–3, with 22 victories by knockout and 17 first-round finishes.[10] Barboza moved to the United States in January 2009.

Barboza's professional MMA career began in April 2009 inTampa, Florida, with a victory over Aaron Steadman via TKO in the first round. In his next fight, in the Renaissance MMA promotion, Barboza defeated Lee King via second-round KO, winning the lightweight title. Barboza defended the belt, also against King, later that year, winning via submission in the first round.

Ring of Combat

Barboza went on to joinNew Jersey–based promotion Ring of Combat, making his promotional debut at Ring of Combat 28 against Nabih Barakat. He won the fight via KO just over a minute into the first round.

After a second successful title defense in Renaissance MMA, Barboza challenged for the Ring of Combat lightweight belt against Marcelo Guidici. He won the fight via TKO due to leg kicks in the first round.[14]

Barboza's first title defense was originally scheduled for Ring of Combat 31, against Mikhail Malyutin,[15] but, due to his signing with the UFC, he was replaced byLuiz Azeredo.[16]

2010

Barboza was expected to make his UFC debut againstDarren Elkins on November 20, 2010, atUFC 123.[17] However, Elkins was forced from the card with an injury and replaced by newcomer Mike Lullo.[18] Shortly into the third round, Barboza defeated Lullo by TKO due to leg kicks (for the first time in UFC history).

2011

Barboza facedAnthony Njokuani on March 19, 2011, atUFC 128,[19] winning by unanimous decision. Both fighters earnedFight of the Night honors.[20]

Barboza defeatedRoss Pearson atUFC 134 via split decision.[21] Both fighters earnedFight of the Night bonus honors.[22]

2012

Barboza facedTerry Etim on January 14, 2012, atUFC 142. He defeated Etim by KO in the third round, becoming the first fighter in UFC history to finish an opponent via wheel kick.[23] The win earned Barboza his firstKnockout of the Night andFight of the Night bonus awards[24]

Barboza was expected to faceEvan Dunham on May 26, 2012, atUFC 146,[25] but Dunham dropped out of the bout due to injury and was replaced by returning veteranJamie Varner.[26] Barboza suffered his first professional MMA loss via Knockout in the first round.

2013

Barboza was expected to faceJustin Salas on January 19, 2013, atUFC on FX 7.[27] However, Salas was forced out of the bout with an injury and replaced by promotional newcomerLucas Martins.[28] Barboza defeated Martins via TKO at 2:38 of the first round.

Barboza was scheduled to faceJohn Makdessi on July 6, 2013, atUFC 162, but an injury forced Makdessi off the card and he was replaced byRafaello Oliveira.[29] Barboza won the fight by TKO due to leg kicks in the second round.

Barboza facedDanny Castillo on December 14, 2013, atUFC on Fox 9.[30] After a dominant first round by Castillo, in which he nearly finished Barboza via strikes and then with a submission attempt, Barboza rallied back and won by majority decision.[31] Both fighters earnedFight of the Night honors.[32]

2014

Barboza facedDonald Cerrone on April 19, 2014, atUFC on Fox 11.[33] Despite finding early success with his striking, Barboza was knocked down by a jab and lost via submission at 3:15 of the first round.[34]

Barboza facedEvan Dunham on July 16, 2014, atUFC Fight Night 45.[35] He won the fight via TKO in the first round.[36]

Barboza facedBobby Green on November 22, 2014, atUFC Fight Night 57.[37] He won the fight via unanimous decision.[38]

2015

Barboza facedMichael Johnson on February 22, 2015, atUFC Fight Night 61.[39] He lost the fight by unanimous decision.[40]

Barboza was expected to faceMyles Jury on July 25, 2015, atUFC on Fox 16, replacing an injuredAnthony Pettis.[41] However, Jury himself had to pull out due to injury and was subsequently replaced by undefeatedPaul Felder.[42] Barboza won the fight via unanimous decision and earned his fifthFight of the Night bonus award.[43][44] UFC PresidentDana White gave Barboza and Felder high praise afterwards, calling the fight "incredible."[45]

Barboza facedTony Ferguson on December 11, 2015, atThe Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale, replacing an injuredKhabib Nurmagomedov.[46] After a back-and-forth first round that saw Ferguson docked one point due to an illegal upkick, Barboza lost the fight via submission in the second round.[47] Both fighters earnedFight of the Night honors.[48]

2016

After the loss to Ferguson, Barboza decided to move to New Jersey to train at Mark Henry's and Ricardo Almeida's MMA team.[49] Barboza facedAnthony Pettis on April 23, 2016, atUFC 197.[50] He won via unanimous decision.[51]

Barboza facedGilbert Melendez on July 23, 2016, atUFC on Fox 20.[52] He won via unanimous decision.[53]

2017

Barboza facedBeneil Dariush on March 11, 2017, atUFC Fight Night 106.[54] He won the fight via knockout due to a flying knee in the second round.[55] Subsequently, he earned his firstPerformance of the Night bonus award.[56]

Barboza facedKhabib Nurmagomedov on December 30, 2017, atUFC 219.[57] He lost the fight by unanimous decision.[58]

2018

Barboza facedKevin Lee on April 21, 2018, atUFC Fight Night 128.[59] At the weigh-ins, Lee weighed 157 pounds, one pound over the lightweight non-title fight upper limit of 156 pounds. Subsequently, the bout proceeded at catchweight, and Lee forfeited 20% of his purse to Barboza.[60] Barboza managed to connect with a spinning back kick and hurt Lee, but went onto lose via TKO due to doctor stoppage in round five.[61]

After losing two consecutive fights, Barboza decided to return to Florida and American Top Team.[62]

Barboza facedDan Hooker on December 15, 2018, atUFC on Fox 31.[63] He won the fight via TKO in round three.[64]

2019

Barboza facedJustin Gaethje on March 30, 2019, atUFC on ESPN 2.[65] He lost the fight via knockout in round one.[66] This fight earned him theFight of the Night award.[67]

Barboza facedPaul Felder in a rematch on September 7, 2019, atUFC 242.[68] He lost the fight by a controversial split decision.[69] 13 out of 16 MMA media outlets scored the bout in favor of Barboza,[70] and subsequently the decision was appealed to be overturned. UFC, working in lieu of an athletic commission, denied the appeal.[71]

2020

On December 31, 2019, Barboza announced his intent to move down to the featherweight division.[2] He was expected to faceJosh Emmett in a featherweight bout on May 2, 2020, atUFC Fight Night: Hermansson vs. Weidman.[72] However, on April 9, Dana White announced that the event had been postponed.[73] Instead Barboza facedDan Ige on May 16, 2020, atUFC on ESPN: Overeem vs. Harris.[74] He lost the bout by another controversial split decision.[75] 16 out of 18 MMA media outlets scored the bout in favor of Barboza.[76]

Barboza was expected to faceSodiq Yusuff on October 11, 2020, atUFC Fight Night 179.[77] However, Yusuff pulled out of the fight on September 22 for undisclosed reasons,[78] and was replaced byMakwan Amirkhani.[79] He won the fight via unanimous decision.[80]

2021

On February 25, 2021 news surfaced that Barboza had signed a new multi-fight contract with the organization albeit having one fight left on his prevailing contract.[81] In May, Barboza revealed that the contract was signed for six fights.[82]

Barboza facedShane Burgos on May 15, 2021, atUFC 262.[83] He won the fight via knockout in the third round after Burgos experienced a delayed reaction to being knocked out with a right cross.[84] This fight earned Barboza the $75,000Fight of the Night bonus award.[85]

Barboza facedGiga Chikadze on August 28, 2021, atUFC on ESPN 30.[86] After a back-and-forth affair, Barboza lost the fight via TKO in round three.[87]

2022

Barboza facedBryce Mitchell on March 5, 2022, atUFC 272.[88] He lost the fight via unanimous decision.[89]

Barboza was scheduled to faceIlia Topuria on October 29, 2022, atUFC Fight Night 213.[90] However, Barboza withdrew in late September due to a knee injury[91]

2023

Barboza facedBilly Quarantillo on April 15, 2023, atUFC on ESPN 44.[92] He won the fight via knockout in the first round.[93] This win earned him his secondPerformance of the Night award.[94]

Barboza facedSodiq Yusuff on October 14, 2023, atUFC Fight Night 230.[95] After nearly being finished with punches in the first round, Barboza rallied and won the fight by unanimous decision.[96] This performance earned him his ninthFight of the Night award.[97]

2024

Barboza facedLerone Murphy on May 18, 2024, atUFC Fight Night 241.[98] He lost the fight by unanimous decision.[99] This performance earned him his tenthFight of the Night award.[100]

2025

Barboza was scheduled to faceSteve Garcia on February 22, 2025, atUFC Fight Night 252.[101] However, Barboza withdrew from the fight due to an injury and the fight was scrapped.[102][103]

Barboza facedDrakkar Klose in a lightweight bout on August 16, 2025 atUFC 319.[104] He lost the fight via unanimous decision.[105]

Barboza facedJalin Turner on December 6, 2025 atUFC 323.[106] He lost the fight by technical knockout in the first round.[107]

Fighting style

Described as a "dyed-in-the-wool striker,"[108] Barboza is known for his dangerous kicking game.[109] UFC color commentatorJoe Rogan has stated that Barboza is "probably the best kicker in MMA."[110] He scored the firstwheel kick knockout in UFC history, and is one of three fighters to finish multiple UFC bouts vialeg kicks (the other two beingAntoni Hardonk andJonathan Martinez).[111] Barboza is also known for his effective use ofswitch kicks, which have been labeled "exceptionally quick"[112] and "ferocious".[43]

Personal life

Barboza and his wife, Bruna, have a son and a daughter.[113] He has lived and trained in the United States for several years, primarily in New Jersey. He became an American citizen in 2022.[114]
