Édouard Joseph Louis Marie Van Beneden (5 March 1846 in Leuven – 28 April 1910 in Liège) was a Belgianembryologist, cytologist andmarine biologist.[1][2] He was professor ofzoology at theUniversity of Liège. He contributed tocytogenetics by his works on theroundwormAscaris. In this work he discovered howchromosomes organizedmeiosis (the production ofgametes).

He is son ofPierre-Joseph Van Beneden, azoologist andpaleontologist.

Van Beneden elucidated, together withWalther Flemming andEduard Strasburger, the essential facts ofmitosis, where, in contrast to meiosis, there is a qualitative and quantitative equality of chromosome distribution to daughter cells. (Seekaryotype).[3][4]
