Eccles was aparliamentary constituency of the United Kingdom, centred on the town ofEccles inGreater Manchester, England. It returned oneMember of Parliament (MP) to theHouse of Commons of theParliament of the United Kingdom, elected by thefirst past the post system.

History

The constituency was established under theRedistribution of Seats Act 1885 for the1885 general election, and abolished at the2010 general election.

1885–1918

The constituency, known asSouth East Lancashire, Eccles Division, was defined as consisting of thecivil parishes ofBarton upon Irwell,Clifton,Flixton,Urmston,Worsley and the part of the parish ofPendlebury not in theParliamentary Borough of Salford.[1]

1918–1983

TheRepresentation of the People Act 1918 redrew all constituencies inGreat Britain and Ireland. TheParliamentary Borough of Eccles consisted of two local government districts: theMunicipal Borough of Eccles and theUrban District ofSwinton and Pendlebury (later incorporated as aborough). The seat was renamedEccles Borough Constituency by theRepresentation of the People Act 1948.[1]

1983–1997

In 1983 constituency boundaries were altered to align with the new administrative geography introduced by theLocal Government Act 1972. Eccles became a borough constituency in the parliamentary county ofGreater Manchester, consisting of sevenwards of theCity of Salford: Barton, Eccles, Pendlebury, Swinton North, Swinton South, Weaste and Seedley, and Winton.[2]

1997–2010

The boundaries of the constituency were altered for1997 general election, reflecting a change in ward boundaries. It was defined as consisting of the following wards: Barton, Cadishead, Eccles, Irlam, Pendlebury, Swinton North, Swinton South and Winton.[3]

Abolition

Following its review of parliamentary representation in Greater Manchester, theBoundary Commission for England recommended that Eccles be split between two new constituencies:
