East Hanney is a village, andcivil parish onLetcombe Brook about 3 miles (5 km) north ofWantage. Historically East andWest Hanney were formerly a singleecclesiastical parish ofHanney.[2] East Hanney was part ofBerkshire until the1974 boundary changes transferred the Vale of White Horse toOxfordshire.
East Hanney had a chapel by 1288, dedicated toSaint James, but Alice Yate is said to have dissolved it after she took over themanor in 1546.[2] The presentChurch of England parish church ofSaint James the Less[2] was designed by theGothic Revival architectGeorge Edmund Street in a13th century English style and built in 1856.[3] It has since been maderedundant and converted into a private home. Hanney Chapel isNon-conformist and was built in 1862.[4] It was closed after theFirst World War but reopened in 1943.[4]
Dandridge's Mill is aGeorgianwater mill built in the 1820s as asilk mill.[5] It is aGrade II Listed building but after it ceased working it became derelict.[5] In 2007 it was restored as four private apartments.[5] It is a low-carbon redevelopment with a number of sources of renewable energy, including anArchimedean screw[5] on themillstream that powers the property's own electricity generator.
East Hanney has apublic house, the Black Horse[6] free house. There is also a branch of theRoyal British Legion. Hanney War Memorial Hall includes avillage shop with sub-Post Office.
