East China (华东) is aregion in thePeople's Republic of China. It mainly consists of seven provincial administrative regions, namelyShanghai,Jiangsu,Zhejiang,Anhui,Fujian,Jiangxi, andShandong.
A concept abolished in 1978, for economical purposes the region was defined from 1949 to 1961 by theChinese Central Government to include theprovinces of (in alphabetical order)Anhui,Fujian,Jiangsu,Shandong andZhejiang, as well as themunicipality ofShanghai. In 1961, the province ofJiangxi was added to the region (previously it was considered part ofSouth Central China).
Since the Chinese governmentclaimsTaiwan and the few outlying islands of Fujian (Kinmen andMatsu) governed by theRepublic of China (Taiwanese government) asits territory, the claimed "Taiwan Province, People's Republic of China" is also classified in this region.
