Entente Sportive Sétifienne (Arabic:الوفاق الرياضي السطايفي), known asEntente de Sétif, commonly referred to asES Sétif orESS for short, is an Algerian professionalfootball club based inSétif. The club was founded in 1958 and its colours are black and white. Their home stadium, the8 May 1945 Stadium, has a capacity of 18,000 spectators. The club is currently playing in theAlgerian Ligue Professionnelle 1.
ESS is one of the most successful clubs in Algeria, having won theAlgerian Ligue Professionnelle 1 eight times and theAlgerian Cup a record of eight times. They are also one of only three Algerian clubs to have won theCAF Champions League, winning it twice in1988 and2014. They have also won theArab Champions League twice, in2007 and2008, as well as three North African Cups in 2009 and 2010. In 2015, they became the first Algerian club to win theCAF Super Cup since the creation of the competition in 1993.
ES Sétif becameCAF Champions League champion by defeatingDR Congo'sAS Vita Club in the2014 final; and the reigningCAF Super Cup champions, by beating Egypt'sAl Ahly in the2015 Super Cup[5] and the reigningAlgerian Ligue Professionnelle 1 champions.
The club was founded in 1958 by Ali Benaouda and Ali Layass as Entente Sportive Sétifienne (ESS), the name was later changed to Entente Pétroliers Sétifienne (EPS) in 1977, and again in 1984 it became known as Entente Plastique Sétifienne (EPS) and was then later changed back to Entente Sportive Sétifienne (ESS).[6]
The first colours of the club were green and the white, and following a confrontation with the French Army in a match withFC Gadir on May 8, 1945, colours changed to black and white as mourning for the events on this day. The Guessab Stadium was the original name for the club's home.
ES Sétif is one of the prestigious top flight Algerian clubs. The club has won theAlgerian Cup 8 times, and is the only Algerian team to have won the Afro-Asia cup, in 1989 inQatar.
Since its foundation, ES Sétif has had 19 presidents, the first being Ibrahim Dokomi.[citation needed] The current president is Hassan Hammar.
In 1988, ES Sétif won theAfrican Cup of Champions Clubs by beatingIwuanyanwu Nationale ofNigeria 4–1 on aggregate in the final.[7] After losing the first leg 1–0 inLiberty Stadium,Ibadan, ES Sétif scored 4 goals in the return leg inConstantine to lift the trophy. ES Sétif were playing in theAlgerian second division at time and are the only club in Africa to date to have won theAfrican Cup of Champions Clubs while not being in the top flight.
By winning the1988 African Cup of Champions Clubs, ES Sétif qualified for the 1989Afro-Asian Club Championship, where they facedAl-Sadd ofQatar, winners of the1988–89 Asian Club Championship. ES Sétif won both legs, 2–0 at home and 3–1 inDoha, to lift the trophy.[8] They are the onlyAlgerian club to have won the competition.
On June 29, 2010, ES Sétif became the first fully professional club inAlgeria.[9]
On August 8, 2010, ES Sétif defeatedCS Sfaxien ofTunisia 1–0 to win the first-ever edition of theUNAF Super Cup.[10]

ES Sétif whose team has regularly taken part inConfederation of African Football (CAF) competitions. Qualification for Algerian clubs is determined by a team's performance in its domestic league and cup competitions, ES Sétif have regularly qualified for the primary African competition, theAfrican Cup, by winning theLigue Professionnelle 1. ES Sétif have also achieved African qualification via theAlgerian Cup and have played in the formerAfrican Cup Winners' Cup. The first match was againstKampala City FC and it ended in a 1–0 loss, As for the biggest win was in1991 againstASC Linguère 7–1, and biggest loss was againstUnion Douala 5–0 in1981.
After six years of absence, ES Setif returned to continental competitions, this time in theAfrican Cup of Champions Clubs, for the first time Thefollowing year and in the same competition, despite falling to thesecond division, Les Aigles Noirs managed to achieve the title for the first time againstIwuanyanwu Nationale of Nigeria and after the defeat in the First leg 1–0, they achieved an overwhelming victory in the Second leg 4–0 in a match that took place atStade du 17 Juin inConstantine, After that, they met withAl Sadd SC in the final of theAfro-Asian Club Championship, and won the title for the first time, which is the only one of its kind in the history of Algerian football. In1991 ES Sétif participated in the last continental participation in the twentieth century, where it reached the semi-finals, and in the Second round,Malik Zorgane scored the first hat-trick for ES Sétif againstSC Gagnoa.
