TheEMD GM6Wdiesel–electric locomotive was introduced byElectro-Motive Diesel as an export modelswitcher in 1960.

The prototype unit spent its entire life at theGeneral MotorsLaGrange, Illinois, plant. It wound up life at the Pielet Brothers Scrap yard next to EMD's plant and was eventually scrapped.[1]

It inspired limited sales. Four went to theChemin de Fer de l'Etat Libanais inLebanon[2] One known unit, built January 1961, was bought by the Buffelsfontein Gold Mine atStilfontein inNorth West Province,South Africa.[3]
