TheECW/FMW Supershow was aprofessional wrestlingevent jointly promoted by the Japan promotionFrontier Martial-Arts Wrestling (FMW) and the United States–based promotionExtreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) atKorakuen Hall inTokyo, Japan on December 12 and 13, 1998.[1][2]

Both shows aired live onpay-per-view (PPV) in Japan viaDirecTV.[2][3] Excerpts from the December 13 show aired on episode #295 of thesyndicatedtelevision showECW Hardcore TV in the United States on December 16, 1998.[4][5] The December 13 show was also released onDVD.[6]

Background

The shows formed part ofFrontier Martial-Arts Wrestling (FMW)'s December 1998 "Year End Sensation" tour.[3] The event featured several matches from FMW's Over the Top tournament, which was held to determine the number one contender for theFMW Brass Knuckles andIndependent Heavyweight Championships.[1][2]

In a continuation of the working relationship between FMW andExtreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), ECW promoterPaul Heyman sent eight members of the ECW roster to participate on the 1998 Year End Sensation tour, including on the December 12 and 13 ECW/FMW Supershow events. During their visit, the ECW personnel visited theRibera Steakhouse, a popular eatery amongst professional wrestlers. On December 11,Sabu, among other ECW and FMW wrestlers, attended a retirement ceremony for his uncle,The Sheik, held byAtsushi Onita inKorakuen Hall. On December 12, Sabu and his wife Mibu held a traditional Japanese wedding ceremony.[7]

The first show of the event was held on December 12, 1998, inKorakuen Hall inTokyo, Japan. It was attended by 2,150 people.[1][3]

The opening bout was asingles match betweenTeam No RespectstablematesHido and Takeshi Ono to determine who would advance past the first round of the Over the Top tournament. The match was won by Hido, who pinned Ono using asmall package.[1][3]

ECW World Heavyweight ChampionShane Douglas successfully defended his title at the December 12, 1998 event.

The second bout was a singles match betweenMasao Orihara andRicky Fuji to determine who would advance past the first round of the Over the Top tournament. The match was won by Orihara, who pinned Ono using a small package.[1][3]

The third bout was athree way dance betweenHisakatsu Oya,Super Leather, andYoshinori Sasaki. The match was won by Oya, who first eliminated Super Leather by throwing him over the top rope, then eliminated Sasaki by forcing him to submit using anoctopus hold.[1][3]

The fourth bout was a singles match betweenKodo Fuyuki andMuhammad Yone, with Fuyuki pinning Yone following alariat.[3]

The fifth bout sawECW World Tag Team Championsthe Dudley Boyz defend their titles against Gosaku Goshogawara andTetsuhiro Kuroda. The match was won by the Dudley Boyz, withD-Von Dudley pinning Goshogawara following a3D.[1][3]

The sixth bout was a singles match betweenHideki Hosaka andYukihiro Kanemura to determine who would advance past the first round of the Over the Top tournament. The match was won by Kanemura, who pinned Hosaka following aBlast Yama Special.[1][3]

The seventh bout was a singles match betweenKoji Nakagawa andMr. Gannosuke to determine who would advance past the first round of the Over the Top tournament. The match was won by Mr. Gannosuke, who forced Nakagawa to submit using hisNirvana Strangle (afull nelsoncamel clutch).[1][3]

The eighth bout sawECW World Heavyweight ChampionshipShane Douglas defend his title againstGedo. The match was won by Douglas, who pinned Gedo following aPittsburgh Plunge.[1][3][5]

The main event was atag team match pittingHayabusa andTommy Dreamer againstRob Van Dam and Sabu. The match was won by Sabu and Van Dam, with Van Dam pinning Dreamer with adiving crossbody.[1][3]

The second and final show of the event was held on December 13, 1998, inKorakuen Hall inTokyo, Japan. It was attended by 2,150 people.[2][3][8] The commentators for thepay-per-view broadcast in Japan were Go Ito,Jado, Jtarô Sugisaku, and Takashi Saito;[2]Joey Styles providedEnglish language commentary on theECW Hardcore TV broadcast inpost-production.[4]

The sixth bout sawECW World Heavyweight ChampionShane Douglas defend his title againstTommy Dreamer. Douglas defeated Dreamer by pinfall following aPittsburgh Plunge.[2][3][8]

The seventh bout sawECW World Tag Team Championsthe Dudley Boyz defend their titles againstRob Van Dam and Sabu. Sabu and Van Dam defeated the Dudley Boyz by pinfall after Van Dam drove a chair intoBuh Buh Ray Dudley's face with aVan Daminator, thus becoming the new ECW World Tag Team Champions.[2][3][5][7][8]

The eighth bout (which was not included on the pay-per-view broadcast) was a singles match between Hido and Mr. Gannosuke to determine who would advance past the quarter finals of the Over the Top tournament. The match was won by Mr. Gannosuke, who forced Hido to submit using theNirvana Strangle (afull nelsoncamel clutch).[2][3][8]

The ninth bout (which was not included on the pay-per-view broadcast) was a singles match betweenHisakatsu Oya andTetsuhiro Kuroda to determine who would advance past the quarter finals of the Over the Top tournament. The match was won by Oya, who pinned Kuroda using abridging German suplex.[2][3][8]
