Elijah Barrett Prettyman Jr. (June 1, 1925 – November 4, 2016) was an American lawyer.
Prettyman was born inWashington, D.C. His father was United States federal judgeE. Barrett Prettyman.[1][2]
Prettyman graduated fromSt. Albans School in Washington, D.C. He then served in theUnited States Army inEurope duringWorld War II. In 1949, he graduated fromYale University. He then worked as a journalist for two years inRhode Island. In 1953, he received a law degree from theUniversity of Virginia Law School.[3]
Prettyman served aslaw clerk toUnited States Supreme Court justicesRobert H. Jackson,Felix Frankfurter, andJohn Marshall Harlan II. He then practiced law in Washington, D.C. In 1962, he negotiated an agreement withFidel Castro to secure the release of prisoners involved in theBay of Pigs invasion. He served asspecial counsel to theUnited States House of Representatives Ethics Committee in the 1980s involving theAbscam investigation.
Prettyman died in a hospital in Washington, D.C. from a respiratory ailment.[1] He is buried atRockville Cemetery inRockville,Maryland.
