He is best known for his Tijuana trilogy:Tijuana Makes Me Happy Tierra madre La Pura Vida Slamdance ,[ 1] [ 2] Morelia International Film Festival ,[ 3] [ 4] Kumeyaay Land Red Nation Film Festival .[ 5] Baja California , Mexico, where he lives.
Verrechia grew up inSaint Barthélemy ,French West Indies . His early years were punctuated by periods of extreme pain due to hisankylosing spondylitis . At age 12, he was sent toPitié-Salpêtrière Hospital inParis ,France . Bedridden for over 4 years, he started correspondence courses from theNational Centre for Distance Education . After thenational service , Verrechia studied Cinema atParis Nanterre University taught byJean Rouch from laCinémathèque française . He graduated with honors in Film & TV fromNew York University 'sTisch School of the Arts , and became soon after a U.S. citizen.
