Dylan Verrechia (born March 9, 1976, inParis) is aBarthélemois award-winningfilm director,auteur,screenwriter,director of photography, andproducer, withItalian,Breton,Sephardic, andDane origins. He is best known for his Tijuana trilogy:Tijuana Makes Me Happy,Tierra madre, andLa Pura Vida, which won him among many other accolades the Grand Jury Prize atSlamdance,[1][2] the Special Jury Award for Best Mexican Film atMorelia International Film Festival,[3] Best Mexican Feature Award at Rosarito Film Festival,[4] and for his documentaryKumeyaay Land which won Best Documentary Award at theRed Nation Film Festival.[5] Verrechia is a U.S. citizen, and his films look particularly atBaja California, Mexico, where he lives.

Early life

Verrechia grew up inSaint Barthélemy,French West Indies. His early years were punctuated by periods of extreme pain due to hisankylosing spondylitis. At age 12, he was sent toPitié-Salpêtrière Hospital inParis,France. Bedridden for over 4 years, he started correspondence courses from theNational Centre for Distance Education. After thenational service, Verrechia studied Cinema atParis Nanterre University taught byJean Rouch from laCinémathèque française. He graduated with honors in Film & TV fromNew York University'sTisch School of the Arts, and became soon after a U.S. citizen.

Career

Verrechia is a director of Mexican cinema,[6] and his films have won awards at festivals worldwide.[7]

Over a period of twenty years, he directed the Tijuana trilogy:[8]Tijuana Makes Me Happy won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Narrative Feature atSlamdance Film Festival,[1][2] the Indie Max Award for Best Feature Film atSan Antonio Film Festival,[9] and screened atCECUT Tijuana Cinematheque.[10]Tierra Madre[3] won the Jury Honorable Mention for Best Mexican Feature Film atMorelia International Film Festival,[11] Best Narrative Feature atReeling: The Chicago LGBTQ+ International Film Festival, Diversity Award for Best Feature Film at Barcelona LGTIBQ+ Film Festival,[12] Outstanding Achievement in Foreign Feature Award at Williamsburg International Film Festival, Cinesul Award for Best Picture at Cinesul Ibero-Americano Film Festival,[13] Golden Palm for Best Feature Film at Mexico International Film Festival, Honorary Mention atNew Jersey Film Festival, and Silver Lei for Best Feature and Excellence in Filmmaking at Honolulu Film Festival.[14]La Pura Vida was officially selected atHarlem International Film Festival,[15][16] Festival Mix Mexico,[17][18][19] and El Ojo Cojo Film Festival,[20] won Best Mexican Feature at Rosarito Film Festival,[4] the Honorable Mention for Best International Narrative Feature at the Williamsburg International Film Festival,[21] Best Self-Funded Film atCine Pobre Film Festival, Best Feature Film at Paris Art & Movie Awards,[22] and Best Film About Women at New York International Women Festival.[23]

Verrechia's documentariesKumeyaay Land received the Red Nation Film Award of Excellence for Best Documentary Short at theRed Nation Film Festival,[24] the Environmental, Social, Economic, Political Justice Award for Indigenous America at Latino & Native American Film Festival, the Honorable Mention for Best Mexican Documentary atShorts México,[25] andKids of the Majestic won Best Feature Children's Advocacy atArtivist Film Festival & Awards[1], and Directing and Writing Insight Awards of Recognition at the National Association of Film and Digital Media Artists[2].The Laughter of God won the IFCT World Tour Awards for Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Cinematography.

Verrechia is the co-founder of Troopers Films (Arakimentari directed by Travis Klose onNobuyoshi Araki withBjörk andBeat Takeshi, Audience Award for Best Documentary atBrooklyn Film Festival), of Palenque Filmaciones (Sangre de mi sangre directed by Christopher Zalla, Grand Jury Prize for Best Dramatic atSundance Film Festival), and of 25th Frame (Picture Me) directed bySara Ziff, Audience Award for Best Documentary atMilan International Film Festival).
