TheDying Slave (L'Esclave mourant,Lo Schiavo morente) is a sculpture by theItalian Renaissance artistMichelangelo, created between 1513 and 1516. It was intended to accompany another figure, theRebellious Slave, as part of the design for thetomb of Pope Julius II.[1] The marble figure is 215 centimetres (7 ft 1 in), and is housed in theLouvre Museum in Paris.
In 1976, the art historian Richard Fly wrote that the sculpture "suggests that moment when life capitulates before the relentless force of dead matter".[2]In the 2012 volumeThe Slave in European Art, Charles Robertson discusses theDying Slave in the context of actualslavery inItaly during the Renaissance.[3]
Fourteen reproductions of theDying Slave adorn the top storey of the police station in Paris's12th arrondissement.[4] The building, althoughArt Deco in style, was designed in 1991 by architectsManuel Núñez Yanowsky [es] andMiriam Teitelbaum.[5][6]
