Dumitru Dumitriu (born 19 November 1945 inBucharest), commonly known asȚiți Dumitru orDumitriu III, is a retired Romanianfootballer and coach. He is the younger brother ofEmil Dumitriu(Dumitriu II) who was an International footballer and champion of Romania withRapid București and the elder brother ofConstantin Dumitriu(Dumitriu IV) who won the Romanian championship withSteaua București.[1][2]
Dumitriu started his youth career withRapid București and made his senior career debut withMetalul Târgoviște in 1964. After a year, he moved toASA Târgu Mureș, where he spent three years. In 1968, he signed withSteaua București, where he played until 1972. In the same year he joined Bucharest city rivalsRapid București. He also played forOlimpia Satu Mare,FCM Galați and ICSIM București.
He won a cap forRomania in 1967.
After he quit playing in 1977, he became quickly a player/manager for ICSIM București, amongst others in the beginning he managed lower league sides such as Rapid Fetești, Autobuzul București, Steaua Mizil, and Rulmentul Bârlad.
The highlight of his career as a manager was with Steaua București, qualifying them three times in a row in theUEFA Champions League and also winning theRomanian First League in 1995, 1996 and 1997. In 1999 and 2005 he won the championship again, this time withRapid București and then withFCSB, leading him to a total of 5 championships won.[3] He also guided Steaua to twoRomanian Cups in 1996 and 1997, and twoRomanian Supercups in 1994 and 1995.
In 1994, he was the assistant coach toAnghel Iordănescu in the1994 FIFA World Cup.
In the 1997–98 season he reached theCup Winners' Cupquarter-finals asAEK Athens manager, losing a semi-final place toLokomotiv Moscow in the last minute of the second leg match.
