Dublin South-Central is aparliamentary constituency inDublin City represented inDáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament orOireachtas. The constituency elects four deputies (Teachtaí Dála, commonly known as TDs) on the system ofproportional representation by means of thesingle transferable vote (PR-STV).

Constituency profile

The largest employers in the area are theGuinness Brewery andSt. James's Hospital. Dubbed the "People's republic of Dublin South-Central,[1][2] the constituency is one of the country's most left-wing,[3][2] with all of the TDs elected in 2020 being from centre-left or left-wing parties.[4] BothLabour Party TDs elected in 2011 had previously been members of other left-wing parties:Eric Byrne was a former member of theWorkers' Party andDemocratic Left, andMichael Conaghan had stood in a number of elections forJim Kemmy'sDemocratic Socialist Party.

History and boundaries

A constituency of this name was created by theElectoral (Amendment) Act 1947 containing the Mansion House, Merchants' Quay, Royal Exchange, St. Kevin's, South Dock, Usher's and Wood Quay wards ofDublin.[5] Its boundaries changed considerably over the years, generally moving to the west within the city.

It is now located near the centre ofDublin city. The constituency comprisesBallyfermot,Bluebell,Chapelizod,Crumlin,Drimnagh,Dolphin's Barn,Inchicore, theLiberties,Kimmage andWalkinstown.

TheElectoral (Amendment) Act 2023 defines the constituency as:[6][7]

"In the city of Dublin, the electoral divisions of:

Labour Party TDPat Upton died on 22 February 1999. A by-election to fill the vacancy was held on 27 October 1999. Turnout was only 27.9%, down from 60% at the 1997 general election.[49] The seat was won by the Labour Party candidate Mary Upton, sister of the deceased TD.
