Drosera microphylla, thegolden rainbow,[1] is an erectperennialtuberous species in thecarnivorous plant genusDrosera. It isendemic toWestern Australia and grows ongranite outcrops or in sandy orlaterite soils.D. microphylla produces small, circular,peltate carnivorous leaves along erect stems that can be 10–40 cm (4–16 in) high. It blooms from June to September, displaying its large goldensepals and smaller, variably-coloured petals. In populations nearPerth, the petals are red, whereas petal colour nearAlbany tends to be orange. Some plants east ofEsperance have white petals.[1][2][3]
D. microphylla was first described and named byStephan Endlicher in 1837. In 1848,Jules Émile Planchon described the new speciesD. calycina, which was later reduced tosynonymy withD. microphylla.George Bentham described the newvarietyD. calycina var. minor in 1864. Thistaxon was also reduced to a synonym ofD. microphylla. Lastly, in his 1906 taxonomicmonograph of the familyDroseraceae,Ludwig Diels also described a new variety,D. microphylla var. macropetala, which was also later reduced to a synonym.[4]
