Leotiomyceta represents all the filamentousascomycete fungi (Pezizomycotina), excluding the classesPezizomycetes andOrbiliomycetes. It is well supported in several studies comparingDNA sequences infungi.[1][2] It has originally been proposed as asuperclass[3] but later was proposed as a ranklesstaxon for anywell supported group above class (together withSaccharomyceta,Dothideomyceta, andSordariomyceta[4]). Ranklesstaxa do not strictly follow the rules fortaxonomic classifications in plants and fungi (ICBN) and therefore these names are informal, although they appear to reflectnatural groups.
