Donald James Mowat,CM, is aCanadian-British (naturalizedAmerican)makeup artist.[1][2] He is best known for his work on8 Mile,The Fighter,Prisoners,Skyfall,Nightcrawler,Sicario,Nocturnal Animals,Blade Runner 2049,First Man, andDune.[3][4] Originally fromMontreal, divides his time betweenLos Angeles andToronto.[5]
Donald was nominated for anAcademy Award in the categoryBest Makeup and Hairstyling for the filmDune.[6] He was appointed a member of theOrder of Canada in 2022.[7]
Donald was born and raised inMontreal,Quebec, Canada to British parents.[8] He was invited to become a member ofAcademy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1999.[9] He served on the board of directors for the Actors' Fund of Canada (2008–2014) and Board member representing the Art Department Branch of theAcademy of Canadian Cinema & Television (2007–2011).[10] He is an active member of the education and membership committee member forBAFTA Los Angeles and BAFTA UK.[11] He served twelve years as an executive makeup artists branch member atAMPAS. He is also a member ofIATSE,BECTU, and theEuropean Film Academy represented by theUnited Talent Agency.
Donald was awarded aQueen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 and theSovereign's Medal for Volunteers by The Governor General for Canada in 2018 for his volunteer work with high school students for BAFTA LA education outreach.[12][13]
