Donald Lipski (born May 21, 1947) is an Americansculptor best known for hisinstallation work and large-scalepublic works.
Donald Lipski was born inChicago, Illinois in 1947. He was raised in the northern suburb ofHighland Park, the son and grandson of bicycle dealers. Although his first welded sculptures as a teen won himThe Scholastic Art Award in high school, he was a history major and anti-war activist at theUniversity of Wisconsin–Madison, earning a B.A. inAmerican History in 1970. InMadison, Lipski discovered ceramics while working with well-known ceramics artistDon Reitz. He then pursued an MFA in ceramics fromCranbrook Academy of Art in 1973, where he studied withRichard DeVore and Michael Hall. Lipski taught at theUniversity of Oklahoma from 1973 to 1977, when he moved toNew York.
Lipski attained growing recognition with his early installationGathering Dust, which comprised thousands of tiny sculptures pinned to the wall, first at New York gallery Artists Space in 1978, and soon after inMuseum of Modern Art as part of the Project series.[1] In 1978 he won the first of threeNational Endowment for the Arts grants, followed by aGuggenheim Fellowship in 1988,[2] an award from theAmerican Academy of Arts and Letters in 1993, andthe Rome Prize[3] ofThe American Academy in Rome in 2000. He is permanently conserved in the New YorkMetropolitan Museum of Art,[4] theCorcoran Gallery of Art inWashington, D.C.,The Art Institute of Chicago, and dozens of other museums.
Lipski's installation works continued in the 1990s withThe Bells, at theContemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati,[5]The Starry Night, atCapp Street Project,[6]San Francisco,Pieces of String Too Short to Save,[7] in the Grand Lobby ofThe Brooklyn Museum, NY), andThe Cauldron[8] at theParrish Art Museum, Southampton, New York.
In recent years, Lipski has focused his efforts on creating large-scale works for public spaces. Some of his most recognizable works includeThe Yearling, outside theDenver Public Library (originally exhibited byThe Public Art Fund atDoris Freedman Plaza,Central Park, New York, 1997),Sirshasana, hanging in theGrand Central Market,Grand Central Terminal in New York City, andF.I.S.H. at theSan Antonio River Walk, inTexas. There are twenty others across the U.S.
In 2012, Lipski was living and working inPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania. He is represented by Galerie Lelong in New York.
