Donal Carey (born 15 October 1937) is an Irish formerFine Gael politician who served asMinister of State for the Gaeltacht and the Islands from 1995 to 1997. He served as aTeachta Dála (TD) for theClare constituency from 1982 to 2002. He also served as aSenator for theLabour Panel from 1981 to 1982.[1] He was first elected to theClare County Council in 1974.[2]
Carey was educated atSt Flannan's College,Ennis andUniversity College Dublin. He was elected to the15th Seanad in 1981 as a Senator for theLabour Panel. Carey was elected a Fine GaelTD for theClare constituency at theFebruary 1982 general election and retained his seat until losing it at the2002 general election.[3]
On 27 January 1995, he was appointed by theRainbow Government on the nomination ofJohn Bruton asMinister of State at the Department of the Taoiseach with responsibility for western development and rural renewal andMinister of State at the Department of Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht with responsibility for the Gaeltacht, holding the posts until the change of government in 1997.[4]
His sonJoe Carey was a Fine Gael TD for the same constituency from 2007 to 2024.
