Dominic Keating (né Power ; born 1 July 1961) is a British television, film and theatre actor best known for his portrayals of Tony in theChannel 4 sitcom Desmond's and LieutenantMalcolm Reed onStar Trek: Enterprise .
Early life and education [ edit ] Keating was born Dominic Power to parents Patricia (née Keating) and Lawrence Power, inLeicester . His father was Irish and his mother worked as an actress for a number of years.[ 1] [ 2] [ 3] His maternal grandfather, abrigadier , was awarded anOBE .
Keating took part in his first stage performance while he was attending prep school at LGS Stoneygate. He played the character Cripple inThe Ragged School . He then attendedUppingham School where he continued pursuing drama under Chris Richardson. At Uppingham School Theatre, Keating playedLaertes in a production ofHamlet ;Rowan Atkinson reviewed the performance. Keating was part of theCadet Force before realising he did not wish to proceed with a military career.[ 2] [ 3] [ 4] [ 5]
After graduating from theUniversity College London withfirst class honours in history,[ 6] Keating tried various jobs before deciding to become a professional actor.
Since there was another Dominic Power already represented by the actor's unionEquity , he took his mother'smaiden name of Keating.[ 7] To obtain hisEquity card , he worked in adrag act calledFeeling Mutual .[ 8]
Keating had success on the UK stage before working as a television and film actor. He originated the roles of Cosmo inPhilip Ridley 'sThe Pitchfork Disney [ 9] and Bryan inMichael Wall 'sAmongst the Barbarians , for which Wall won first prize in the Mobil Playwrighting Competition.[ 5] [ 10] Keating's stage work in the United Kingdom includes the one-man playThe Christian Brothers atKing's Cross ,The Best Years of Your Life at the Man in the Moon Theatre,Screamers at theEdinburgh Playhouse Festival. InLos Angeles , he has appeared inAlfie at theTiffany Theater .[ 9]
Keating first received major attention in the UK with a semi-regular role as Tony in theChannel 4 sitcom Desmond's (1989–94)[ 8] [ 24] which he was cast for after his role in the playScreamers. [ 25] He has madeguest appearances inInspector Morse and other television programmes.[ 26]
After moving to the United States, he received the role of the demonic warrior Mallos on the short-lived 2000 seriesThe Immortal ,[ 27] and starred in theZalman King seriesChromiumBlue.com .[ 26] He also guest starred on series includingBuffy The Vampire Slayer ,G vs E andSpecial Unit 2 ,[ 27] before landing a role in the main cast ofStar Trek: Enterprise as Lieutenant Malcolm Reed; the show ran for four seasons. Since then, he has had guest roles on the seriesLas Vegas ,Holby City and theCSI: NY episode "Uncertainty Rules".[ 26]
Keating joined the cast of the hit showHeroes for its second season, playing an Irish mobster in a four-episode arc. He also guest-starred for three episodes on theFox TV seriesPrison Break , and in 2010 guest-starred on the FX original seriesSons of Anarchy .[ 26] [ 28]
Keating appears in several films includingJungle 2 Jungle ,The Hollywood Sign ,The Auteur Theory, Certifiably Jonathan, andHollywood Kills. He lent his voice toRobert Zemeckis 's animated version ofBeowulf .[ 28] At aStar Trek convention inSacramento ,California on 9 September 2006, he announced he had been cast as an Australian scientist in theSpecies sequelSpecies IV .[citation needed ] He stars inTim Russ's Plugged (2007)[ 29] and appears asSherlock Holmes's brother in the filmSherlock Holmes (2010) bythe Asylum .[ 30]
In 1988, Keating had a role in aTango commercial .[ 31] Keating had a role in two early 1990sVidal Sassoon commercials,[ 32] [ 33] where his British pronunciation of "salon " resulted in a spoof onSaturday Night Live .[ 34] [ 25] In 1999, he was in a commercial for thePlayStation gameCrash Team Racing .[ 35]
In 2007, Keating appeared in a promotional campaign forSprint/Nextel as fictitious British rock starIan Westbury .[ 36] [ 37] Also for Sprint, Keating appeared in a 2009 cinema courtesy spot that encouraged cinema goers to avoid using their phones during the screening of movies.[ 38] [ 39] [ 40]
In 1997, Keating was one of the directors for the seriesThe Heartbreak Cafe. [ 39] [ 41] [ 42] [ 43]

Audiobook narration [ edit ] Keating has recorded a number ofaudiobooks . He described the experience of recordingThe Iliad: A New Translation byCaroline Alexander over a span of twelve total days as "the most challenging thing [he has] ever done, and the most rewarding".[ 28]

Keating married Sarah Falk, a child and adolescent psychiatrist,[ 50] in June 2025;[ 51] attendees included Keating'sEnterprise friendsScott Bakula ,John Billingsley ,Anthony Montgomery andConnor Trinneer .[ 51] The couple resides inLos Angeles .
