Duhok Governorate (Kurdish :پارێزگای دھۆک, Parêzgeha Dihok ,Syriac :ܗܘܦܪܟܝܐ ܕܢܘܗܕܪܐ ,romanized : Hoparkiya d’Nohadra ,[ 3] Arabic :محافظة دهوك ,romanized : Muḥāfaẓat Dohūk ) is agovernorate in the semi-autonomousKurdistan Region of Iraq. Its capital is the city ofDuhok . It includesZakho , near theIbrahim Khalil border crossing withŞırnak Province ,Turkey . It borders theAl-Hasakah Governorate ofSyria . It was established on 27 May 1969, previously part ofNineveh Governorate .[ 4]
The population of the governorate was estimated to be 1,772,367 in 2023.[ 5]
Demographics Duhok Governorate is mainly populated byKurds with anArab ,Assyrian , andArmenian minority. Historically, there was aJewish population in the region as well. The main religious groups areMuslims ,Yazidis andChristians .[ 6]
