Town of ancient Cappadocia

Doara (Ancient Greek:Δοάρα) was a town ofancient Cappadocia, inhabited inByzantine times.[1] It was in theChamanene prefecture created byArchelaus ofCappadocia duringHellenistic times.[2] The town appears on thePeutinger Table betweenCaesarea andTavium.[3] It was also mentioned byHierocles asRhegedoara (Ῥεγεδοάρα),[4] and theNotitiae Episcopatuum.

Doara became the seat of aBishopric in 373, as part of the conflict betweenAnthimus, bishop ofTyana andBasil of Caesarea, as the town lay between these twobishoprics. In 383 the bishop Bosporius was accused of heresy and although originally a suffragan of the bishop inTyana, in 436Justinian placed the bishop under the bishop ofMokissos. No longer the seat of a residential bishop, Doara remains atitular see of theRoman Catholic Church.[5]

AlthoughW. M. Ramsay identified Doara with Mudjur (Mucur) orHacıbektaş (Hadji Bektash), modern scholars located its site nearDuvarlı (Divarlı village inÇiftlik town,Niğde) inAsiatic Turkey.[1][6]
