Federal electoral division boundaries in Australia are determined at redistributions by a redistribution committee appointed by theAustralian Electoral Commission. Redistributions occur for the boundaries of divisions in a particular state, and they occur every seven years, or sooner if a state's representation entitlement changes or when divisions of a state are malapportioned.[1]

The division was created in 2004 and is named afterNeville Bonner, the firstAboriginal Australian person to serve in the Australian Parliament. Bonner served in the federal Senate as a Queensland Liberal Senator.[2]

ThenRoss Vasta re-took the seat for theLNP at the2010 election. Vasta then remained the MP for Bonner until the2025 Federal Election where he lost the seat to Labor'sKara Cook.
