Geography

Federal electoral division boundaries in Australia are determined at redistributions by a redistribution committee appointed by theAustralian Electoral Commission. Redistributions occur for the boundaries of divisions in a particular state, and they occur every seven years, or sooner if a state's representation entitlement changes or when divisions of a state are malapportioned.[1]

History

[edit]
Neville Bonner, the division's namesake

The division was created in 2004 and is named afterNeville Bonner, the firstAboriginal Australian person to serve in the Australian Parliament. Bonner served in the federal Senate as a Queensland Liberal Senator.[2]

The seat had a notionalLabor majority when it was created, but was won by theLiberal Party in2004 by a slight margin.Kerry Rea regained the seat for Labor in2007. ThenRoss Vasta re-took the seat for theLNP at the2010 election. Vasta then remained the MP for Bonner until the2025 Federal Election where he lost the seat to Labor'sKara Cook.
