Thedistrict duchy, also known as adistrict principality, was a type of state under thepatrimonial system, such as aduchy orprincipality, formed in thefeudal system as a result of a landpartition between the members of aroyal family.[1] It occurred in theMiddle Ages andearly modern period, notably inEurope, in states such as theHoly Roman Empire,[2]Duchy of Poland,[1][3] andKievan Rus'.[4]
