Diplopterys cabrerana is a shrub native to theAmazon Basin, spanning the countries ofBrazil,Colombia,Ecuador andPeru.[1] In theQuechua languages it is calledchaliponga orchagropanga; in parts of Ecuador it is known aschacruna—a name otherwise reserved forPsychotria viridis.[2]

D. cabrerana andP. viridis are both common admixtures forayahuasca. Both species are rich sources ofDMT, atryptamine thought to beendogenous in humans and many other species.D. cabrerana additionally produces5-MeO-DMT.

The plant stores thealkaloidsN,N-DMT,5-MeO-N,N-DMT, andN-methyltetrahydro-beta-carboline in its leaves and stems.[1] Leaf samples were found to be 0.17-1.75%N,N-DMT,[1] but only trace amounts ofN-methyltetrahydro-beta-carboline occur in the leaves.[3] The leaves also storemethyltryptamine and trace amounts ofbufotenin.[1][3]

Cuttings ofD. cabrerana are transplantable. The cuttings are either planted in soil directly, or rooted first in water.[1]
