Diogenites are a group of theHED meteorite clan, a type ofachondritic stonymeteorites.

Origin and composition

[edit]

Diogenites are currently believed to originate from deep within the crust of theasteroid4 Vesta, and as such are part of theHED meteorite clan. There are about 40 distinct members known.

Diogenites are composed ofigneous rocks ofplutonic origin, having solidified slowly enough deep withinVesta's crust to form crystals which are larger than in theeucrites. These crystals are primarilymagnesium-richorthopyroxene, with small amounts ofplagioclase andolivine.[1]

Name

[edit]

Diogenites are named forDiogenes of Apollonia, an ancient Greek philosopher who was the first to suggest an outer space origin for meteorites.[2]
