TheDiocese ofSheffield is an administrative division of theChurch of England, part of theProvince of York.
The Diocese of Sheffield was created underGeorge V on 23 January 1914,[1] by the division from theDiocese of York (along with that part of theDiocese of Southwell in the city of Sheffield). It covers most of the County ofSouth Yorkshire (exceptBarnsley), with a small part of theEast Riding of Yorkshire, one parish inNorth Yorkshire and one inNorth Lincolnshire – an area of almost 576 square miles (1,490 km2). It is headed by theBishop of Sheffield and itsCathedral isSheffield Cathedral.
The diocese has been linked with theDiocese of Argentina of theAnglican Church of South America since 1993[2] and the Hattingen-Witten District in Westphalia of theProtestant Church in Germany since 1990.[3]
The diocesan Bishop of Sheffield (Pete Wilcox) is theordinary of the diocese[4] and is assisted throughout the diocese by aBishop suffragan of Doncaster (Leah Vasey-Saunders).[5]Alternative episcopal oversight (for parishes in the diocese who reject the ministry of priests who are women) is provided by theprovincial episcopal visitor (PEV) theBishop suffragan of Beverley,Stephen Race. He is licensed as anhonorary assistant bishop of the diocese in order to facilitate his work there. Besides Beverley,David Hawtin, formerBishop suffragan of Repton has lived inGreenhill since 2007 and is licensed as an honorary assistant bishop.[6]
The Diocese is subdivided into twelvedeaneries, split between twoarchdeaconries:
