He was the son of Count Dietrich I ofWied (died about 1200), a follower of EmperorFrederick Barbarossa in theThird Crusade. His brotherRudolf, Theoderich's uncle, was already elected Archbishop of Trier in 1183, however, he was denied byPope Lucius III who favoured his rivalFolmar of Karden. Theoderich began his ecclesiastical career about 1189; from about 1196, he served asprovost ofSt. Kunibert's inCologne, from 1205 also ofRees on theLower Rhine. In 1210 he is documented asarchdeacon atTrier and provost ofSt. Paulinus' Church.
Elected archbishop upon the death of his predecessorJohn I on 15 July 1212,[1] he soon entered into a fierce quarrel with theRhenish countHenry II of Nassau over the erection ofMontabaur Castle on the right bank of the Rhine. Henry had the fortress devastated and the archbishop arrested, nevertheless Theoderich was able to finish the construction two years later.

Like his ancestors, he remained a loyal supporter of the ImperialHouse of Hohenstaufen, backing the young kingFrederick II against hisWelf rivalOtto IV, which earned him the opposition of his counterparts inCologne andMainz. He also ensured theelection of Frederick's sonHenry (VII) asKing of the Romans in 1220 and his coronation by ArchbishopEngelbert of Cologne two years later. He remained a close confidant of the emperor, whom he accompanied toItaly andSicily, and also of His son Henry (VII) until his rebellion in 1234.
Under Theoderich's rule, construction was begun on the rebuilding ofLiebfrauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) in approximately 1230 AD.[2] He consecratedLimburg Cathedral in 1235 AD.[3] He also promoted the establishment of theOrder of Saint John in Trier.[citation needed] In 1216, he requested the founding of aTeutonic Order commandry inKoblenz (at the laterDeutsches Eck).[4][5] He acquired theEifel estates aroundMalberg and hadKyllburg Castle erected about 1240.[6]
