Dieter Mann (20 June 1941 – 3 February 2022) was a German actor, director, university professor, and radio personality. In his career, he acted in several theater productions and in over 140 film and television productions. Between 1984 and 1991, he was director of theDeutsches Theater. In 1986, he became a member of theBerlin Academy of Arts.[1] Internationally, he is best known for having portrayedWilhelm Keitel inDownfall.
Mann was born inBerlin as the son of a worker.[2] He had an older brother who later became a foreign correspondent.[3] He went to school inPankow and learned the trade oflathe operator atVEB Kühlautomat.[2][1] After hisAbitur, he began acting training in the early 1960s at theErnst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts.[2]
From 1964 to 2006, during his time at theDeutsches Theater Berlin, Mann portrayed the Templar inGotthold Ephraim Lessing'sNathan the Wise, the lead role inClavigo and Edgar Wibeau inDie neuen Leiden des jungen W..[4][5] He also portrayed Demetrius in a German production ofA Midsummer Night's Dream.[5] From 1984 to 1991, he wasIntendant of the house.[2]
Mann was also a radio announcer forRundfunk der DDR and would often read plays while on the air.[6] His audio books became bestsellers.[7]
After thereunification of Germany, Mann appeared in a number of productions on film and television. He had guest appearances on the television series such asAS – Danger is his business,Peter Strohm,Tresko,Ein starkes Team,Stubbe – Von Fall zu Fall,In aller Freundschaft,Rosa Roth,Bella Block and several times inTatort.[8][9] From 1998 to 2007, he played Prof. Dr. Siegmar Bondzio in the seriesDer letzte Zeuge.[8] Mann played at theBurgtheater in Vienna and atFrank Castorf'sVolksbühne.[10][11]
From 1995, Mann was a lecturer at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts.[1]
Mann played the role ofGeneralfeldmarschallWilhelm Keitel in theAcademy Award-nominated 2004 filmDownfall.[10] His final roles were in the 2011 dramaWay Home [de] and in the 2014 television comedy filmDie letzten Millionen.[8]

Mann was married toBarbara Schnitzler [de] and had a daughter, actressPauline Knof [de].[12] His mother-in-law was actressInge Keller.[12] Mann remarried and lived nearKönigs Wusterhausen, Germany.[13]
In 2016, Mann announced that he hadParkinson's disease.[14] He died on 3 February 2022 in Berlin, at the age of 80.[15][13]
