Devin Kalile Grayson is an American comic book writer and novelist.

Early life

Grayson was born inNew Haven, Connecticut. She was raised innorthern California, where she lived with her mother inBerkeley and her father inOakland.[1] She legally changed her name to Devin Kalile Grayson in her twenties due tochildhood sexual abuse issues.[2]

Her early ambition was to be an actress. She transferred fromBerkeley High School to theSan Francisco School of the Arts, studying additionally with theAmerican Conservatory Theater,Cazadero Performing Arts Camp,Berkeley Shakespeare Festival, and theShelton Studios.[1]

While attendingcommunity college she decided to become a writer and transferred toBard College, where she studied fiction writing underMona Simpson.[3] After graduating she moved toSan Francisco, where she worked at ahealth maintenance organization and attended graduate writing classes at theUniversity of California, Berkeley.[4] In her free time she also wrotefanfiction.[5]

She became interested in comics after watchingBatman: The Animated Series.[1][3][4]

Career

Grayson's first comic book script to see print was "Like Riding a Bike", a 10-page short that appeared in theBatman Chronicles in 1997.[6] Other work forDC Comics andMarvel Comics soon followed.

Personal life

Grayson is openlybisexual.[7][8] She was diagnosed withtype I diabetes at the age of fifteen and has anassistance dog.[9] She lives innorthern California with her husband and her stepson.[10] She was formerly in a relationship with fellow comic book writerMark Waid.[11]
