TheDesign 1019 ship (full nameEmergency Fleet Corporation Design 1019) was asteel-hulledcargo ship design approved for mass production by theUnited States Shipping Board'sEmergency Fleet Corporation (EFT) inWorld War I.[1]
They were referred to as the "Ferris-type".[1] Production was spread out over four shipyards: Atlantic Corporation ofPortsmouth, New Hampshire (10 ships);Long Beach Shipbuilding Company ofLong Beach, California (8 ships);Southwestern Shipbuilding ofSan Pedro, California (19 ships); andWestern Pipe and Steel Company ofSan Francisco, California (18 ships).[1][2][3][4][5] 54 ships were completed for the USSB in late 1919 through 1920.[1] An additional ship was completed in 1920 for a private shipping company.[1] Engines were a mixture of steam turbines, coal-fueled triple expansion engines, and oil fueled triple expansion engines.[1]
