Desh is a region adjacent to theWestern Ghats between theGodavari River andKrishna River, a part ofDeccan Plateau, in the states ofMaharashtra andKarnataka. The region is hilly and slopes towards the east, and is drained by the upper reaches of theGodavari andKrishna rivers and their tributaries.[1][2]
In the context of the history of Maharashtra, "Desh" is an abbreviation for "Maharashtra-desh", that historical region of the west-centralDeccan Plateau that is called theDivision of Pune.[3] Marathwada came to be called separately because it had been conquered by theNizam of Hyderabad as part of the formerPrincely state ofHyderabad.
The Desh region was the birthplace and core of theMaratha Kingdom, founded byShivaji in the 17th century, and is home to a number of cities, likeSatara andPune, associated with the Maratha Empire history. The region came underBritish rule in 1818, at the conclusion of theThird Anglo-Maratha War. Most of the region was ruled directly by the British as part of theBombay Presidency, but several princely states, includingSatara,Sangli, andKolhapur, remained under Maratha rulers insubsidiary alliance with the British. Satara was annexed by the British in 1848. AfterIndian Independence in 1947, Bombay Presidency became the Indian state ofBombay. Bombay state was divided into the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat in 1960.
Politics in Paschim Maharashtra is linked with thecooperative movement. Most of the sugar cooperative factories in western Maharashtra work as power centers and play a major role in politics.Sangli District has a major political climate in the region.[4][5]
The Deshastha Brahmins "Desha" is the name given to the territory of the valleys of the Krishna and the Godavari, and the Deccan Plateau. Hence this community is spread over the states of Maharashtra (especially in Kolhapur), Karnataka, and Andhra.
