Derrick Baxby (1940 – 24 March 2017) was a British microbiologist and authority onOrthopoxviruses.[1][2] He was a senior lecturer in medical microbiology at theUniversity of Liverpool.[3]
He proposed that a presumed horsepox virus could be the long-sought ancestor ofvaccinia.[4] In 1977, he reported 12 cases ofcowpox occurring in England between 1965 and 1976.[4]
