Derek Emmanuel Adjei Agyakwa (born 19 December 2001) is a Dutch professionalfootballer who plays as adefender forErovnuli Liga clubIberia 1999.
Agyakwa began his career in the Netherlands as ayouth team player withTwente, and spent January 2020 until June 2022contracted to English clubWatford, whilst spending the first half of the 2020–21 season onloan atComo in Italy. He then moved on toPort Vale and was loaned out toChorley in September 2022. He joined Georgian club Iberia 1999 in February 2024, helping them to theErovnuli Liga title at the end of the2024 season.
Agyakwa joinedTwente from local club Amsterdam but was released after two years in Twente's academy.[3] He joined EnglishPremier League clubWatford on an initial six-monthcontract after passing a two-week trial in January 2020.[3] His contract was extended by a year in June.[4] On 16 September 2020, Agyakwa made his professional debut, playing the first half in Watford'sEFL Cup victory overOxford United.[5] On 5 October, Agyakwa signed a new two-year contract with Watford and wasloaned out to ItalianSerie C sideComo for the2020–21 season.[6] He played his first match for Como on 20 October in a 3–2 win againstLucchese, and received ayellow card for what he later claimed had been adive by the opposition forward.[7][3] He wassent off during a 2–2 draw withOlbia at theStadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia on 25 November.[8] In January 2021, the loan was ended early due to a mutually agreed termination.[9] Having only appeared in a match-day squad as an unusedsubstitute in oneFA Cup game throughout the2021–22 season, Agyakwa leftVicarage Road after being released upon the expiry of his contract.[10]
On 26 July 2022, Agyakwa signed forEFL League One clubPort Vale following a successful trial period.[11] On 13 September 2022, he joinedNational League North clubChorley on a short-term loan deal, wheremanagerAndy Preece felt he could "add vital competition and depth" to the squad.[12] He featured in just oneFA Cup game for the "Magpies", before returning toVale Park to make his debut for "Valiants" in a 2–0 victory overWolverhampton Wanderers U21 in theEFL Trophy on 18 October.[13] He made his league debut on 18 March, coming on forWill Forrester 35 minutes into a 3–2 home defeat toBurton Albion.[14]David Flitcroft, the club'sdirector of football, confirmed that the player's contract would not be renewed beyond June 2023.[15]
In February 2024, Agyakwa travelled to Georgia to joinErovnuli Liga clubIberia 1999.[2] He played 33 league games as the club won the2024 league title.[2]
Born in the Netherlands, Agyakwa is of Ghanaian descent.[16]
