Dennis Bert Claridge (August 18, 1941 – May 1, 2018) was an American professionalfootball player, aquarterback in theNational Football League (NFL) for theGreen Bay Packers andAtlanta Falcons.[1] He playedcollege football at theUniversity of Nebraska under head coachesBill Jennings andBob Devaney,[2] and later attended itsdental school.[3]
Born inPhoenix, Arizona, Claridge playedhigh school football inMinnesota atRobbinsdale, a suburb northwest ofMinneapolis. As a senior in college in1963, he led Nebraska to an undefeated season in theBig Eight Conference, a 9–1 regular season, and a victory overAuburn in theOrange Bowl.
Selected inthird round of the1963 NFL draft as a junior eligible, Claridge stayed in college and joined the Packers in1964. He was a member of theNFL championship team in1965, playing behindHall of Fame quarterbackBart Starr andZeke Bratkowski under head coachVince Lombardi.[1][4] Claridge was selected in the1966 expansion draft by the Falcons.[5] Green Bay was interested in reacquiring him for the1967 season, but he left the NFL after three seasons to complete dental school.[3]
Claridge later worked as an orthodontist inLincoln, Nebraska. He died in 2018 of bladder cancer at the age of 76.[6]
