TheArab Democratic Socialist Ba'ath Party (Arabic:حزب البعث الديمقراطي العربي الاشتراكيḤizb al-Ba‘th al-Dīmuqrāṭī al-‘Arabī al-Ishtirākī;French:Parti Baath arabe socialiste démocratique) is aneo-Ba'athistpolitical party founded in 1970 and led byIbrahim Makhus, a former Syrian foreign minister. It is a remnant ofSalah Jadid'sleft-wing faction of theArab Socialist Ba'ath Party – Syria Region. The party is based inParis,France and joined theNational Democratic Rally coalition in 1981.[1]
Unlike historicBa'athism which advocates Ba'athistpolitical control of the state, the Arab Democratic Socialist Ba'ath Party supportsdemocraticpluralism. The party advocates the implementation of the laws enshriningfreedom of speech, assembly, andequality of opportunities that, although included in theconstitution, are not enforced. The party also supports the concept ofclass struggle.[1]
The Arab Democratic Socialist Ba'ath Party joined theNational Coordination Committee for Democratic Change following the beginning of theSyrian Civil War, and has advocated dialogue with the government to ensure a handover of power whilst rejecting both external military intervention and the arming of the opposition. The party also supportedKofi Annan'speace plan.[1] The party also has representation in theSyrian Democratic Council. (the political wing of theSyrian Democratic Forces)[2]
