TheDemocratic Front (Italian:Fronte Democratico,FD), is a heterogenous and mainly regional faction within theDemocratic Party (PD), apolitical party in Italy.[3][4] The faction was launched byMichele Emiliano, President ofApulia, one of the 20regions of Italy, and former Mayor ofBari, in the run-up of the2017 leadership election.
The FD includescentrists,Christian leftists,social democrats,democratic socialists, andleft-wing populists.
In the election Emiliano obtained 10.9% of the vote and lost toMatteo Renzi (69.2%) andAndrea Orlando (20.0%). However, Emiliano did well inSouthern Italy, obtaining 54.4% in Apulia, 24.4% inBasilicata and 22.6% inMolise.[5]
