TheDefense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) is an agency within theU.S. Department of Defense whose mission is to recover and identify unaccounted Department of Defense personnel listed asprisoners of war (POW) ormissing in action (MIA) from designated past conflicts, from countries around the world.

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency was formed on January 15, 2015, as the result the merger of theJoint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), theDefense Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office, and parts of theUnited States Air Force's Life Sciences Lab.[2] Scientific laboratories are maintained atOffutt Air Force Base,Nebraska, andJoint Base Pearl Harbor–Hickam,Hawaii with their headquarters located atThe Pentagon in Washington D.C. Currently, DPAA is in a cooperative agreement with TheHenry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine, Inc., which provides operational support during worldwide recovery operations.[3] Following the2023 wildfires in Maui, the agency assisted in identifying victims' remains.[4]
