Deer Lick Nature Sanctuary is a protected forest and gorge inCattaraugus County,New York. The preserve is withinZoar Valley nearGowanda, and is managed byThe Nature Conservancy.

History

Deer Lick Nature Sanctuary was created by a donation from Miss Evelyn Alverson toThe Nature Conservancy in 1960 with a further donation of Deer Lick Falls by Herbert F. Darling.[citation needed] It was designated aNational Natural Landmark in November 1967 for its mature hardwood forest and its gorges which highlight theOnondaga Escarpment.[1]

As of 2005, the preserve covered 450 acres (1.8 km2), 80 acres (0.32 km2) of which containold-growth forest.[2] The south fork of theCattaraugus Creek runs alongside part of the preserve. In 2006 the preserve expanded via grants and purchases. There are 11 miles (18 km) of hiking trails open to the public.[3]
