Deadline was anelectronic music collective with an ever rotating line-up. The core of the group was bassistBill Laswell and drummerPhillip Wilson for their first album and Laswell andJonas Hellborg for their second. Artists such asAïyb Dieng,Michael Beinhorn,Bernie Worrell,Fred Maher,Robert Quine also made contributions to the project.[1]
Deadline began as a collaboration between composerBill Laswell ofMaterial and jazz drummerPhillip Wilson ofArt Ensemble of Chicago. Their debut album,Down by Law, was issued in May 1985 throughCelluloid Records.[2] It was a combination of industrial beats and live percussion with African and Western funk influences.[3] A touring band comprising Laswell and Wilson alongsideMichael Beinhorn,Fred Maher andRobert Quine was established but fell apart after only a handful of gigs.[1][4] Thetechno leaningDissident was released in 1991 and featured a different cast of players, withJonas Hellborg as the main composer andAïyb Dieng,Bill Laswell andBernie Worrell the only returning contributors.[5]
