British historian
David Michael LoadesFSA (19 January 1934 – 21 April 2016)[1][2] was a Britishhistorian specialising in theTudor era. He served in the RAF 1953-55 and gained his BA and PhD at Emmanuel College, Cambridge.[3] He wasEmeritus Professor of History at theUniversity of Wales, where he taught from 1980 until 1996, and was Honorary Research Professor at theUniversity of Sheffield from 1996 until 2008.[1] In the 1960s and 1970s he taught at the universities ofSt. Andrews andDurham.[1] From 1993 until 2004 he acted as Literary Director of the John Foxe Project at theBritish Academy;[1][4] he subsequently became an Honorary Member of the History Faculty at theUniversity of Oxford.[5] Aftermilitary service in theRoyal Air Force 1953–1955,[1] Loades studied at theUniversity of Cambridge. He wrote many books on the Tudor period, includingbiographies.[6] He was President of theEcclesiastical History Society (1992–93).[7]
From 1965 to 1981, he was married toAnn (née Glover). They did not have any children, and their marriage ended in divorce.[8]
