David McRae is an American politician. A member of theRepublican Party, McRae has beenMississippi State Treasurer since 2020, having been elected in the2019 election. Prior to entering politics, he worked for his family's business as a managing partner.

Early life and education

McRae is fromRidgeland, Mississippi.[1] He graduated fromJackson Preparatory School in 2000.[2] He graduated fromSouthern Methodist University and moved to California to work in film production.[1] He later returned to Mississippi to study at theMississippi College School of Law, where he earned hisJuris Doctor.[3] While in law school, he worked for JusticeJess Dickinson at theMississippi Supreme Court.[3]

Career

McRae's family owned theMcRae'sdepartment stores.[4] McRae is a managing partner of McRae Investments for his family's business.[3] He is also a licensed attorney.[5]

Politics

ARepublican, McRae ran forMississippi State Treasurer in the2015 election in the Republican primary against Lynn Fitch.[4] The primary was considered one of the most contested races of the cycle due to McRae's ability to self-fund his campaign and his hiring of veteran campaign consultants.[6] He was endorsed byClark Reed, former chairman of the Mississippi GOP.[7] He lost 57% to 42%.[8]

McRae ran again for the office, announcing his candidacy in 2018.[9] He spent heavily in the primary against state senatorEugene Clarke, loaning himself $1.7 million.[10] He was endorsed by the outgoing RepublicangovernorPhil Bryant.[4] He defeated Clarke in the primary and won the general election in November with 61% of the vote against Democrat Addie Lee Green.[11][12]

McRae was sworn in as State Treasurer on January 9, 2020.[13] He was sworn in to a second term on January 4, 2024.[14]

Personal life

McRae lives inRidgeland, Mississippi. He is married and has three children.[3]
