David Magee (born 1962) is an Americanscreenwriter who was nominated for a 2004Academy Award and aGolden Globe forFinding Neverland. Along withSimon Beaufoy, he wrote the screenplay forMiss Pettigrew Lives for a Day starringFrances McDormand andAmy Adams, which was released in2008.
His 2012 screen adaptation of the novelLife of Pi byYann Martel earned him aSatellite Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and a nomination for theAcademy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
He wrote the screenplay for the Disney musicalMary Poppins Returns, directed byRob Marshall, and starringEmily Blunt andLin-Manuel Miranda, which was released in2018.[1] He received theHumanitas Prize in the Best Family Film category for his screenplay.[2]
Magee is writing an untitled musical aboutHans Christian Andersen withStephen Schwartz.[3]
In March 2019, it was announced thatParamount Pictures would develop ananimated film version ofThe Tiger's Apprentice byLaurence Yep from Magee's script adaptation of the book.[4]
In May 2020, it was also announced thatPaul Feig would direct an adaptation ofThe School for Good and Evil based on a script by Magee. The film was released onNetflix in 2022.[5]
In 2021, Magee was tapped to adapt the controversial romance novelLady Chatterley's Lover, withEmma Corrin set to star,Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre directing, helmed by3000 Pictures and distributed byNetflix. The film premiered at the 2022Telluride Film Festival.[6]
In January 2022, it was announced thatMarc Forster would directTom Hanks in an American adaptation of Swedish novelA Man Called Ove (retitledA Man Called Otto) with a script penned by Magee. The film was acquired bySony Pictures and released January 2023.[7]
