David Paul Goforth (born October 11, 1988) is an American former professionalbaseballpitcher. He pitched inMajor League Baseball (MLB) for theMilwaukee Brewers from 2015 through 2017.
Goforth attendedNeshoba Central High School inNeshoba County, Mississippi,[1] and theUniversity of Mississippi (Ole Miss), and playedcollege baseball for theOle Miss Rebels baseball team. Goforthredshirted in his first year at Ole Miss, and spent his redshirt freshman season as arelief pitcher. After the 2009 season, he playedcollegiate summer baseball with theBrewster Whitecaps of theCape Cod Baseball League.[2][3] As a redshirt sophomore, Goforth began the year pitching in relief, but was moved into thestarting rotation later in the year.[4][5] After the season, Goforth was selected by theCleveland Indians in the 31st round of the2010 MLB Draft. Goforth opted not to sign with Cleveland, and instead returned to Ole Miss for his redshirt junior year. Gorforth had a strong season as astarting pitcher for the Rebels as a redshirt junior.[1]
The Milwaukee Brewers selected Goforth in the seventh round of the2011 MLB Draft after the season.[1][6]After the 2013 season, the Brewers assigned Goforth to play for theSurprise Saguaros of theArizona Fall League.[7] He participated in the Fall Stars Game.[8][9]
The Brewers invited Goforth tospring training in 2014.[10] Pitching for theHuntsville Stars of theDouble–ASouthern League in 2014, Goforth was named a midseason and postseason All-Star.[11][12] After the season, the Brewers added Goforth to their40 man roster.[13]
Goforth began the 2015 season with theColorado Springs Sky Sox of theTriple–APacific Coast League. On May 25, the Brewers promoted Goforth to the major leagues afterWily Peralta was placed on thedisabled list.[14] Goforth was designated for assignment by the Brewers on November 23, 2016.[15] He was outrighted to the minor leagues on December 3.[16] On April 14, 2017, Goforth wasdesignated for assignment following the acquisition ofOliver Drake.[17]
On December 9, 2017, Goforth signed a minor league contract with theWashington Nationals. In 38 games for the Triple–ASyracuse Chiefs, he compiled a 3.46 ERA with 45 strikeouts across67+2⁄3 innings pitched. Goforth elected free agency following the season on November 2, 2018.[18]
