David E. Finck (born August 26, 1958) is an Americanjazz bassist. He plays bothbass guitar anddouble bass.

Early life and education

Finck was born inRochester, New York, while his father was attending graduate school at theUniversity of Rochester. Raised inPhiladelphia, he graduated fromCheltenham High School.[1] He studied under Sam Goradetzer and Michael Shahan of thePhiladelphia Orchestra, and graduated fromEastman School of Music in 1980.[2]

Career

Finck played withWoody Herman in 1980 and 1981 and then moved toNew York City, where he played withJoe Williams,Annie Ross,Mel Lewis,Al Cohn,Ernestine Anderson,Rosemary Clooney,Tom Harrell,Jerry Dodgion,Phil Woods,Clark Terry, andAl Grey in the 1980s. He worked withPaquito D'Rivera andSteve Kuhn in the 1990s, as well asFreddie Hubbard,Makoto Ozone, andEddie Daniels. Finck also featured accompanyingAndré Previn on the 1998Deutsche Grammophon album releaseWe Got Rhythm: A Gershwin Songbook.

Finck's debut release as a leader,Future Day, was released in 2008 on Soundbrush Records. The album featuresJoe Locke,Tom Ranier, andJoe LaBarbera, as well as guest appearances fromJeremy Pelt andBob Sheppard.[3]
