David Edmund Burton-Sampson (born November 1977) is a BritishLabour Party politician who has been theMember of Parliament (MP) forSouthend West and Leigh since the2024 general election.[1]
Burton-Sampson was born in November 1977 inCrosby, Merseyside.[2][3] He was raised by a single mother.[4] Burton-Sampson attendedHoly Family Catholic High School inThornton from 1989 to 1996 before graduating with aBA in performing arts from theLiverpool Institute for Performing Arts in 1999.[5] After graduating, he moved to London to pursue a career in the performing arts but ultimately began a career in management, eventually working forMetro Bank.[6] Burton-Sampson has lived inEssex since 1999.[4]
Burton-Sampson was elected as aLabour Party councillor for St Martin's in the2016 Basildon Borough Council election.[7] He eventually became the deputy leader of the Labour group on the council.[8] In May 2017, he was appointed deputy mayor ofBasildon to serve a one-year term under mayor David Harrison of the Wickford Independents. In May 2019, he was appointed mayor of Basildon on a one-year term, however, his term was extended by a year due to theCOVID-19 pandemic. In the2021 council election, Burton-Sampson lost his seat toConservative candidate Davida Ademuyiwa.[9]
In May 2024, Burton-Sampson was selected as the Labour candidate forSouthend West and Leigh in the2024 general election.[10][11] He won the seat with a majority of 1,949 votes, unseating the Conservative incumbentAnna Firth who had won the seat in anuncontested by-election following the October 2021murder of then-MP SirDavid Amess.[1][12] In Parliament, Burton-Sampson chairs theall-party parliamentary group onopen banking and payments, and co-chairs the APPG on fair banking. He also serves as the vice chair for the APPGs onmicromobility andUkraine as well as an officer for the APPGs onParkinson's disease andmale suicide.[13]
He isgay and has been in acivil partnership with his partner Mark since 10 June 2011.[8][14][15][4] He is the chair of Basildon Pride[16] and is a Christian.[17]
