Darren James Paffey[1] is a BritishLabour Party politician who has been theMember of Parliament forSouthampton Itchen since2024.
Paffey studied modern languages at theUniversity of Southampton,[2] where he has since been an Associate Professor of Spanish and Linguistics[3] and teachessociolinguistics and language policy.
Paffey previously served as Deputy Leader ofSouthampton City Council and had representedBargate ward on the City Council since 2011.
Paffey stood for parliament in the2015 and2017 General Elections for theRomsey and Southampton North constituency, increasing Labour's share of the votes on both occasions.
Paffey won his seat with 15,782 votes on 4 July 2024, beating the second placeConservative Party candidate, Sidney Yankson.[4] The incumbent MP wasRoyston SmithGM, who had held the seat from 7 May 2015. Smith announced his retirement from frontline politics in 2023 and did not seek re-election in 2024.[5]
In November 2024, Paffey voted against theTerminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill.[6]
