Darrell Jennings Doughty (June 24, 1936 – May 22, 2009) was an Americanbiblical scholar who taughtNew Testament andEarly Christianity atDrew Theological Seminary for 35 years. Doughty is associated with the revival ofDutch radicalism, along withHermann Detering (Germany) andRobert M. Price.[1] He was anordained minister of thePresbyterian Church.
Born inTwin Falls, Idaho, Doughty moved toOakland, California at an early age, and graduated fromFremont High School in 1954. After obtaining abachelor's degree innuclear engineering at theUniversity of California, Berkeley, in 1958, he studiedtheology at theSan Francisco Theological Seminary, where he earned a Master of Divinity in 1962. In 1965, he obtained adoctorate from theUniversity of Göttingen, where he had been a student ofHans Conzelmann.
Before moving toMadison, New Jersey, in 1969, Doughty taught New Testament theology atPrinceton Theological Seminary and at Southwestern at Memphis (nowRhodes College). During his career at Drew Theological Seminary, he became the editor of Drew's publicationGateway Magazine, and the associate editor of theJournal of Higher Criticism. He retired toPortland, Maine, in 2004.[2]
