Dand Aw Patan District (Pashto:ډنډ او پټان ولسوالۍḍanḍ aw paṭān wuləswāləi;Persian:ولسوالی دند و پتان) is located in the northeastern section ofPaktia Province inAfghanistan. It has a population of around 30,551 local residents.[1] The district is within the heartland of theZazi tribe ofPashtuns.[2]

Dand Aw Patan, which translates to Dand and Patan, is connected by road toKhost in the south andGardez in the west.[3] The district lies next to theDurand Line (Afghanistan-Pakistan border). To its north isZazi District, to the east isKurram District ofKhyber Pakhtunkhwa inPakistan, to the south isJanikhel District and to the westTsamkani District. Theborder town known as Dand Aw Patan has an officialborder crossing with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan.

Most residents of the district are involved in agriculture and trade. The major river in the district is theKurram River, which flows water into Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and finally joins theIndus River.

On May 29, 2020, theTaliban insurgents stormed a check posts of the formerAfghan Border Police (ABP). It was reported that 14 ABP personnel were killed in the attack and three others were injured.[4][5][6] Two Taliban insurgents were also killed during the attack.[7] The attack came soon after the end of the three-dayEid ceasefire announced by the Taliban, which lasted from 24 to 26 May 2020.

On March 4, 2022, at least two people were killed and 15 injured in an explosion that happened inside a mosque in Dand Aw Patan.[8] Another more deadliermosque attack happened on the same day inPeshawar, Pakistan.
