Season thirty-three ofDancing with the Stars premiered onABC andDisney+ on September 17, 2024, and concluded on November 26, 2024.[1] This season was the second to air live on both networks simultaneously.Alfonso Ribeiro hosted the season, while former professional dancer and judgeJulianne Hough returned as co-host.[2]

The Bachelor starJoey Graziadei andJenna Johnson were crowned the champions, while Olympic rugby playerIlona Maher andAlan Bersten finished in second place, actress and singerChandler Kinney andBrandon Armstrong finished in third place, Olympic artistic gymnastStephen Nedoroscik andRylee Arnold finished in fourth place, andNFL wide receiverDanny Amendola andWitney Carson finished in fifth place.[3]

Couples

On August 22, 2024,Stephen Nedoroscik was the first celebrity participant announced for the season.[4]Anna Delvey joined the cast on August 30, as initially reported byPage Six;Deadline Hollywood,The Independent, andVanity Fair confirmed the report the following day.[5][6] Although Delvey was underhouse arrest inEast Village, Manhattan and facingdeportation at the time, she was granted permission from theU.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to travel toLos Angeles as her confinement terms were relaxed.[7][8]Jenn Tran joined the cast immediately following theseason 21 finale ofThe Bachelorette.[9] The full roster of celebrity participants and their partnerships was announced on September 4, viaGood Morning America.[10] Nedoroscik andIlona Maher were the first athletes from their respective disciplines,men's artistic gymnastics andrugby sevens, to compete in the series.[11][12] Delvey was the first to wear anankle monitor while competing.[13]

Three days afterLindsay Arnold confirmed that she would not be returning as a professional dancer,[14]Witney Carson announced onGood Morning America that she would return to the lineup after taking the previous season off.[15]Television advertisements for the season featuredEmma Slater,Sasha Farber,Daniella Karagach,Pasha Pashkov,Britt Stewart,Alan Bersten,Rylee Arnold, andBrandon Armstrong.[16] Formertroupe memberEzra Sosa was promoted to pro, as initially reported by entertainment journalist Kristyn Burtt and later confirmed byGLAAD.[17][18] He is the firstLatino professional dancer to be featured on the series in over a decade.[19]

After originally being scheduled to be in the troupe, Farber was announced as a professional dancer on theGood Morning America cast reveal.[20] He and Tran learned that they would be partnered together approximately 45 minutes before they boarded a flight toNew York City.[9] Burtt also shared withCheryl Burke thatJenna Johnson and the reigning championValentin Chmerkovskiy were slated to return; whileKoko Iwasaki did not.[17]Peta Murgatroyd chose to take the season off following the birth of her third child.[21]Artem Chigvintsev was not set to be a part of the cast when news broke of his arrest inNapa County, California, forfelony domestic violence against his wife,Nikki Garcia.[22]

Hosts and judges

Alfonso Ribeiro andJulianne Hough returned for this season.[30]Carrie Ann Inaba,Bruno Tonioli andDerek Hough returned as judges.[31] The two-night special hosted two guest judges;Rosie Perez appeared on Soul Train Night andGene Simmons appeared on Hair Metal Night.[32][33]Mark Ballas served as the guest judge for Dedication Night.[34]

Dance troupe

After being eliminated in the previous season, the dance troupe returned with Marcquet Hill, Roman Nevinchanyi, Kailyn Rogers and Stephani Sosa, older sister of Ezra Sosa, joining the show as first-time troupe members.[35]

Week 1: Premiere

Each couple performed one unlearned dance to a "personal anthem" of the celebrity. There was no elimination this week; all scores carried over to the following week. Week 3: Two-Night Special

As ABC tweaked its programming schedule to avoid conflicts with theU.S. vice presidential debate, held on October 1, 2024,Dancing with the Stars preempted an original episode that was set to air on the same date.[43] It returned for a special two-night event the following week—with a pre-recorded broadcast on October 7 and a live airing on October 8. ABC's decision forced the season premieres ofCelebrity Wheel of Fortune,Press Your Luck, andWhat Would You Do? to be pushed back by one week.[44]

Night 1 (Soul Train Night)

Each couple performed one unlearned dance to a song that was performed on the musical variety programSoul Train (1971–2006). Another double elimination took place this night.[48] This episode received 15 million fan votes, the highest single-episode total in the show's history.[49]Gene Simmons, founding member ofKiss, appeared as a guest judge.[33] He was criticized by viewers for making inappropriate andmisogynistic remarks towards the female dancers.[50][51] The opening number, choreographed byPasha Pashkov, was set to "Rock and Roll All Nite" by Kiss and featured guitaristJoel Hoekstra fromWhitesnake.[33] Hoeksta also performed "Here I Go Again" forStephen Nedoroscik'sfoxtrot and "The Final Countdown" forJenn Tran'spaso doble.[52]Derek Hough held a second master class centered aroundlifts and tricks.[53]

Each couple performed one unlearned dance to honor the most influential figures and institutions in the celebrities' lives. Three-time mirrorball championMark Ballas returned as a guest judge. As the competition neared the halfway point, judges visited the couples during rehearsals this week to assess their progress and offer feedback.[56]Derek Hough and his wifeHayley Erbert performed acontemporary piece to "Beautiful Things (Acoustic)" byBenson Boone to commemorate Erbert's return to the ballroom after she was hospitalized for acranial hematoma and underwent an emergencycraniectomy last year.[57]

The opening number, choreographed byMandy Moore, was set to "Friend Like Me" fromAladdin (1992) and featured an appearance fromMichael James Scott, who stars as theGenie in itsaccompanying stage musical.[59] This episode also marked the broadcast premiere of the song "We're Back" fromMoana 2 (2024) with a routine by the troupe and eliminated pros, choreographed byBritt Stewart.[59]

Week 6: Halloween Nightmares Night

Each couple performed one unlearned dance inspired by the celebrities' biggestfears and darkestnightmares.[62] Six couples also participated in a dance-off, featuring thecha-cha-cha,jive, andsalsa, for three extra points. For receiving the highest cumulative points in the season so far, Chandler & Brandon earned immunity from the dance-offs and automatically received three bonus points.[63]

There was three numbers in this episode. The opener, choreographed byEmma Slater andGleb Savchenko, was set to "Murder on the Dancefloor" bySophie Ellis-Bextor.Daniella Karagach andPasha Pashkov choreographed the second number to "Aserejé" by Jean Massey. A third routine, choreographed byBritt Stewart andEzra Sosa, was performed by the pros and troupe to "The Ballad of Witches' Road (Sacred Chant Version)" from the miniseriesAgatha All Along.Derek Hough also held a master class focused on wardrobe tips.[64]

Week 7: 500th Episode

ABC preempted a second original episode ofDancing with the Stars to avoid conflicts with theU.S. presidential election andrelated elections, all held on November 5, 2024. It returned the following week.[66]

To celebrate the 500th episode ofDancing with the Stars, in the first round, each couple reinterpreted a memorable dance from a previous season. The second round was the Instant Dance Challenge, in which they had approximately five minutes to choreograph and learn a new dance before performing it live. Although the assigned dance styles and songs were not known beforehand by the couples, they were told that it would be one of four dance styles they had performed earlier in the season.

The opening number was choreographed byPasha Pashkov andDaniella Karagach to "Crazy in Love" byBeyoncé featuringJay-Z, the same song that opened thefirst season ofDancing with the Stars. It featured special appearances fromDerek Hough,Julianne Hough, andSharna Burgess.[67]

Week 8: Semifinals

Each couple performed two unlearned dances: one ballroom and one Latin.[69] No eliminations took place this week; all scores were carried over to the finale.[70] The opening number was choreographed bySasha Farber andEzra Sosa to "Dance the Night" byDua Lipa. The second routine, choreographed byMandy Moore to "Greedy (Acoustic)" byTate McRae, featured some of the professional dancers joining theDancing With The Stars: Live! tour in 2025.[71] There was also a surprise third number to "Looking for a Man in Finance" by Megan Boni, starringJulianne Hough.[72]

For the three-hour finale, each couple performed two dances: a redemption dance selected by one of the judges and theirfreestyle routine. The opening number, choreographed by Ray Leeper, was set to "Holiday" byMadonna. In addition, the professional dancers joining theDancing with the Stars: Live! tour in 2025 performed a routine to "Rush" byTroye Sivan, choreographed byMandy Moore.Mark Ballas andDerek Hough performed anArgentine tango to "Libertango" by Tango Bardo.Season 32 championsXochitl Gomez andVal Chmerkovskiy returned for a performance to "Pink Pony Club" byChappell Roan.[74]
